Michael Samuel – AKA Samuel – was born and raised near Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. At age 19, while trying to figure out what he wanted to ‘be’ when he grew up, he joined the United States Navy where he served for six years. After leaving the Navy Samuel returned home to join the family construction business which is where he found his calling, “doing hair.”
Back in 1982, working construction not far from Capitol Hill I found my passion for hair. A well-known hair stylist opened the first upscale hair salon specializing in African-American hair, and the second I walked through the front door, I knew what I wanted to do. The salon, located in a two-story red brick building, was decorated with white shag carpeting, polished wood floors and a wood burning fire place. This salon attracted the sort of clientele who arrived by limousine service and the stylists and staff were dressed to the nines, men in suits and women in business attire. Within six month I left the family construction business and started cosmology school. The rest is history. I found my love for hair and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Why I’m Still Here
Hair represents change and evolution – out with the old and in with the new. Doing hair speaks to my creative side and it gives me the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. I love it!
